Braintree Pot Bust Yields 35lbs of Marijuana, Pills

Can’t pass up the local interest in this story, since it is right in our neighborhood. The Braintree police netted 35 pounds of Marijuana, along with prescription pills, in a bust of alleged drug traffickers. The drug raid was one of the biggest ever here in Braintree.

According to the Globe, the Braintree deputy police chief alleges that the accused was making multiple trips per month to California to acquire marijuana to be sold locally.

In Massachusetts, marijuana possession under 1oz is not a crime, it is a civil infraction, having been recently decrminalized . But marijuana distribution is still a serious criminal offense. While we believe that decriminalization is a good thing, it is irrational to assume that marijuana comes from nowhere, and somehow spontaneously appears in small quantities. But yes, it beats the alternative.

Even if they hadn’t been caught with cash, empty bags, and a scale, that much pot easily justifies a distribution charge.  And of course, this defendant is also accused of possession with intent to distribute illegal prescription drugs.

California has notoriously lax medical marijuana laws and criminal enforcement, so it makes sense that that would be the source of the drugs. Despite failing to completely legalize marijuana by ballot initiative during the last election, medical marijuana laws there are so broadly written that it is easy for many people to qualify for legal use. So there is a massive industry of legal growers to support that use, and it is nearly impossible to tell where legal cultivation stops and illegal growing takes over.
