Warrant Sweeps in Lawrence Net Felons
The Globe reports that at least 40 people have been arrested in the Lawrence area after a warrant sweep operation.
The joint operation by the Lawrence and Lowell Police departments, the Mass State Police, and various Federal Law Enforcement agencies grabbed up several dozen people wanted for outstanding warrants. Underlying charges included attempted murder, drug offenses, firearms charges, and robbery.
A similar recent sting in Quincy also resulted in a number of outstanding warrant holders turning themselves in directly to police.
Turning yourself in on an outstanding warrant is always preferable to being picked up by the police. With an attorney, you have an opportunity to work out agreeable terms for the warrant charge, and you get to control your fate.
If you are picked up by the police, either in a raid, or in an unrelated traffic stop or incident, you are arrested as a fugitive from justice. Returning to court by such involuntary means will likely result in additional jail time, and/or significant bail, given that you fled the court’s jurisdiction previously.
But the good news is that there are often opportunities to quash the warrant, and get it cleared without significant penalties. But you have to take proactive measures to speak with an attorney who can negotiate a reasonably outcome with the district attorneys office.
But it is never smart to leave an outstanding criminal warrant hanging over your head. It will catch up with you, and it can cause you tremendous problems at an inopportune time.
